26 Oct: Aqua’s Barbie Megahit

“Come on Barbie, let’s go party!” was adopted as a global mantra after Aqua’s catchy single ‘Barbie Girl’ reached number one on October 26th, 1997 in the UK – where it remains in the Top 20 bestselling singles of all time.

Mattel was not amused. The toy titan sued, claiming Barbie’s reputation had been sullied.

In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how relations between Mattel and Aqua finally cooled; explain how the Magaluf club scene was instrumental in breaking Europop hits in Britain and beyond; and discover how a chance encounter on a domestic ferry route changed pop music forever…
